This week students did a great job continuing with the learning of our language system. When learning the importance of adverbs students played an "act it out" game where they had to act out an adverb while the others guessed what it was. There was a lot of laughter which makes the day a lot of fun. I am proud of them all for their commitment to learning in all forms.

Happy Friday and Happy almost spring.
This week in ELA we have been working on learning some of the 8 parts of speech. This learning will continue into next week. We have also been studying ancient types of writing. This is where their first at home homework begins. On Monday, I will provide the students with the directions for researching about two other ancient writing systems. Students will have one week to research any writing system(s) they are interested in. They can use the website I provide them cfge.kendallhunt.com/w5/index.php?t=. They are not limited to this website and can look information up in books, resources from the library, or any other sources of information they have available. They may need your help and it might be fun for you to join in on learning about where some family writing systems started. In class we have already researched ancient Chinese and Sumerian writing. They will record their findings on a paper sent home labeled 4E. The papers will be due back Monday, March 22. If you have any questions do not hesitate to reach out. The goal is for students to begin comparing out language system to those of others. When we compare we are able to understand our own writing better. In Reader's Workshop we have been working on how to read and understand informational texts by recognizing the text features, structures, as well as main idea and supporting details. My goal is that students will transfer the information they have learned here into their reading and research of ancient writing. For Math we are continuing to work on understanding the process and relationship of numbers in addition, subtraction, and multiplication problems. It has been fun watching the students shift from always thinking about the answer to how they got the answer instead. As always I am here for any questions or comments you have. Enjoy your weekend. Thank you so much to all the parents and families for meeting with me over the past two weeks to discuss your amazing student and their performance in GATE. Everyone should have received a letter in regards to the GATE program for the 21-22 school year. Have this signed and returned by March 16. If you have any questions between now and then do not hesitate to reach out.
Feedback I received from the parent survey reflected interest in what we are doing curriculum wise in the classroom. Below you will find a little summary about the ELA unit we just started. I will also be adding this information to our curriculum page here on the website. This week on the student page you will some photos of students doing word work and research on how our writing system was first created. We will continue to explore our writing system as well as the writing system of other languages in the coming months. Thank you again for all you do for your student, this program, and myself. Have a great weekend! -Mrs.Nill Language Arts Unit 2: A World of Wild, Wacky, Wonderful Words This unit is designed specifically to meet the needs of high-ability students by setting the following goals:
The unit includes the following activities that will require some work outside of class and may need your support at home. When students have any homework I will make sure to email parents to keep them informed.
Assessments First, I gave them a pretest to assess their level and skills in language arts literature analysis and persuasive writing. Students will be assessed again at the end of the unit to see the progress they have made. What can I do at Home Here are a few things you can choose to do at home to engage students in the unit we are currently working on:
