We are thankful for another week full of learning and growing in GATE. Below you will find a bit about what we did this week as well as what our students can continue to work on. Khan Academy (all students):
BRIDGE TO GATE (2nd Grade): We are continuing our unit on Geometry. This week our focus was differentiating between 2D and 3D shapes. We used straws to construct polygons and then described them. We had great conversations about what they needed to do with the straws in order to accurately create the shape they wanted. Today they used the foundation of 2D shapes to build prisms and pyramids. Next week we will explore the shapes of faces with a bubble experiment. Next week (Monday 12/6) students are asked to bring in one 3D box of some sort (pasta, tissue, bandaids, cereal, etc...). GATE (3rd & 4th Grade):
We are continuing deepen our understanding of the base-ten number system by comparing it to other number systems. This week students learned about the Egyptian number system and determined that while it was similar to ours in grouping digits by ten, they did not have place value which therefore required lots of symbols. They enjoyed decoding Egyptian numbers while practicing 4-digit addition and subtraction. Students have also been evaluating the power of 0 and what it means in the base-ten system. We have had some great conversations! |
